About this role

Apply for a Researcher Position in Optical Measurements and databases for Space Applications at the National Land Survey of Finland's Finnish Geospatial Research Institute (FGI)!

Job description

We are looking for a researcher to join the Space Geodesy research group in the Department of Geodesy and Geodynamics for a fixed-term position from 01.06.2026-31.05.2027. The fixed-term nature of the position is due to the limited duration of the project.

We are seeking a motivated and skilled researcher to join the multidisciplinary SpacEconomy project funded by the Strategic Research Council. The position may also involve work in other related research projects. The project explores innovative measurement technologies and data solutions to support space-related scientific and industrial applications. The selected candidate will contribute to advancing FGI's capabilities in light scattering characterization of space debris analogs and related instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform light scattering measurements with goniometer to characterize optical properties of materials.
  • Develop and conduct calibration procedures for scattering measurement instruments, ensuring traceability, accuracy, and reliability of measurement results.
  • Participate in instrument development, including testing, optimization, and documentation of improvements in measurement setups.
  • Develop and maintain a structured measurement database, including data processing, organization, quality control, and metadata management.
  • Analyze and interpret scattering measurement results, contributing to scientific publications and project reporting.
  • Our expectations of the applicant
  • Master's degree in physics, optical engineering, remote sensing, or related technical field. Master's students may also apply, and the position can be structured as a master's thesis project.
