Åbo Akademi University invites applications for a fixed-term salaried position as Doctoral Researcher in Education. The position is placed at the Department of Education in Vaasa, Finland. This position is full time for three years (36 months), with start date 1.9.2026 (or as agreed).

ABOUT THE RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT AND THE PROJECT

The Department of Education at Åbo Akademi University constitutes a dynamic and internationally recognized research environment within the human and social sciences. In addition to the research activities of individual researchers, the department is involved in several national and international collaboration networks and externally funded research projects. One of these projects is AI-WELL : Rethinking Sustainable Youth Athlete Development through Machine Learning in the Nordic Model of Athlete Education , funded by the Research Council of Finland.

AI-WELL is a Nordic research project conducted in collaboration with several international partners. The project examines how student-athletes' well-being, mental health, motivation, and development evolve within Nordic sport school environments. By combining longitudinal research, psychology, sport science, and machine learning methods, the project aims to identify factors that support sustainable athlete development and to better understand early risk patterns related to burnout, stress, injuries, and disengagement. The project employs an interdisciplinary quantitative research approach based on longitudinal survey data and digital monitoring tools.
