What you’ll be doing

The Assurance & Control Manager strengthens SPEN’s risk, control and assurance framework by leading a robust, insight‑driven assurance programme that enhances control effectiveness and remediation Reporting to the Enterprise Risk Partner, this role is responsible for coordinating and delivering an effective assurance programme that provides clear visibility of control performance, identifies areas of weakness, and supports the business in implementing improvements that strengthen SPEN’s overall risk posture.  Acting as a key link between operational teams, Internal Audit and senior leadership, you will deliver high‑quality assurance insight to support informed decision making.

Implement and maintain an effective assurance and internal control framework aligned to SPEN’s ERM framework

Provide independent oversight and assurance over SPEN’s compliance with business separation compliance, ensuring controls are in place and operating effectively to prevent cross-subsidy, inappropriate information sharing and discriminatory behaviour

Develop and deliver the annual assurance plan, aligned to priority risks and strategic objectives

Assess and monitor control effectiveness and maturity, providing clear recommendations to strengthen the control environment

Coordinate assurance activity across functions to ensure controls are designed, performed and maintained

Track, escalate and support closure of control weaknesses and business separation findings ensuring timely and effective remediation

Work closely with Compliance and Business Separation Compliance Officer to support monitoring, reporting and investigations of business separation matters

Embed a strong control culture through awareness, guidance, tools and training

Lead, coach and develop a high-performing Assurance & Control team

Provide expert advice on internal controls, assurance standards and regulatory expectations

What you’ll bring

Experience delivering assurance over operational processes within a large, regulated organisation

Strong understanding of regulatory compliance, licence conditions or business separation obligations

Experience assessing controls relating to confidentiality, governance, information barriers or system access

Practical knowledge of internal control frameworks and control effectiveness testing

Proven experience leading and developing assurance, audit or risk teams

Strong analytical skills with the ability to distil complex issues into clear, actionable insights

Excellent communication skills, with confidence engaging senior and director-level stakeholders

Ability to influence, challenge constructively and drive continuous improvement

Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities autonomously

High levels of professional integrity, independence and objectivity

Professionally qualified (e.g. Internal Audit, Risk, Accounting or Compliance) – advantageous

Ability to deliver long-term assurance plans while responding to emerging risks and change

As a minimum, you will demonstrate:

Degree qualified

Experience in assurance, control or audit within a large organisation

Experience delivering or overseeing projects
