Job Description:

Role purpose

Provide end‑to‑end delivery support for global product safety and hazard communication activities by authoring and maintaining product safety documentation, performing hazard classification, supporting regulatory notifications, and managing product safety data and information. The role combines documentation, regulatory application, and data integrity responsibilities to support bp’s licence to sell across global product portfolios.

Key accountabilities

SDS Authoring and Label content creation:

Author, update, publish and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and label information for products across multiple global markets, using established templates, systems and processes.

Ensure documentation is accurate, consistent, aligned with applicable hazard communication regulations, and maintained in line with internal quality and governance requirements.

Hazard Classification and Product Safety Assessment:

Perform hazard classification of substances and mixtures using applicable frameworks (e.g. GHS, EU CLP, US OSHA HazCom and other country requirements), applying available phys‑chem, toxicological, eco-toxicological and compositional data.

Call out sophisticated or ambiguous cases appropriately and support senior colleagues with background assessments and data preparation.

Regulatory Notifications and Compliance Support:

Support the preparation, maintenance and updating of regulatory notifications and product safety dossiers (e.g. EU CLP/Poison Centre Notifications or similar hazard communication submissions where applicable).

Implement documented regulatory changes impacting SDSs, labels and product safety records, following defined instructions and timelines.

Product Safety Data and Information Management:

Collect, validate and maintain product information required to generate compliant documentation, including supplier SDSs, composition data and other regulatory information.

Liaise with suppliers and internal partners to resolve data gaps, inconsistencies or quality issues, ensuring information is stored and maintained accurately in stewardship systems.

Systems, Tools and Ways of Working:

Use product stewardship and SDS authoring systems (e.g. Sphera IA or equivalent) to create outputs, manage records and support traceability.

Support system testing (UAT/regression) and give feedback to improve usability, data quality and process efficiency.

Quality, Reporting and Continuous Improvement:

Participate in quality management activities such as peer reviews, document checks and consistency reviews to support right‑first‑time delivery.

Produce routine reports and trackers as the need arises and give ideas for simplifying processes, improving templates and reducing rework.

Education & Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field (e.g. Toxicology, Biology, Environmental Science or equivalent).

Typically 4 to 6 years’ experience in product safety, hazard communication, SDS authoring, regulatory compliance and/or product data management.

Experience working with SDS authoring or product stewardship systems and handling regulated product documentation.

SDS and label authoring and maintenance

Hazard classification and application of hazard communication regulations

Product safety data and information management

Use of digital stewardship / authoring systems and reporting tools

Working knowledge of global product safety and regulatory requirements

Ways of working & compliance:

Operate to bp’s OMS 7.5 Product Stewardship and assurance practices; ensure audit readiness and drive continuous improvement of processes and systems.
