We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher or doctoral researcher for a fixed-term position in Helsinki to develop machine learning methods for urban climate research projects.
Job description
The position is based in the Climate Impacts and Adaptation Unit, within the Climate Change and Future Cities group. Your main responsibility will be to develop machine learning methods for producing high-resolution climate datasets. In this role, you will work with and integrate large volumes of multi-source data, including climate model outputs, observational data, geospatial datasets, and demographic data. You will actively contribute to the development and impact of your research group as part of a multidisciplinary research unit. In addition, you will participate in developing technical solutions for new climate services, including programming and database solutions as required in other projects of the unit. Depending on your expertise and interests, your tasks may also include the development and programming of various climate services and applications, as well as supporting the research unit's broader programming needs.
Your work will be part of the SmartClim project, funded by the Academy of Finland, as well as the ILMOS-Uusimaa project. In both projects, we develop methods that combine extensive observational and modelling datasets with local-level information to produce high-resolution spatio-temporal data for various microclimatic variables, as well as climate indicators derived from them. The methodological development relies on machine learning and statistical multivariate analysis. The work is based on measurement data from the Finnish Meteorological Institute's local observation networks, which are currently being expanded under the SmartClim project to cover a network of several hundred measurement sites across the Helsinki metropolitan area.
