Climate economics and seasonal forecasts group seeks a university student for scientific research work for the summer in Helsinki, Kumpula.
Job description
You will work in the Climate economics and seasonal forecasts group of the Climate Impacts and Adaptation unit, which focuses on the development of innovative methods for weather, sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting, and the assessment of socio-economic impacts of climate change and adaptation.
Your task will include seasonal forecast data processing, application of machine learning techniques and advanced statistics in postprocessing and interpretation of data. The data sources used are the model outputs provided by the seasonal forecasting systems from Copernicus Climate Change System, reanalyses and observational data. The position offers an excellent opportunity to enlarge your knowledge in seasonal forecasting data, reanalysis data, post-processing techniques and deepen your knowledge in ML methods, advanced statistics and data analysing, and become familiar with CSC's supercomputing resources.
Our expectations of the applicant
The position is suitable for a university-level student pursuing a master's degree in e.g. natural sciences, computer science or environmental science, and to be in the final stages of your studies. We expect you to have at least three years of studies, good knowledge of machine learning methods, statistics, data processing and good programming skills (especially Python and /or R) and experience of data analysis and visualization. In addition, we expect you to be systematic, have good communication skills, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
