Legal Counsel (Commercial & Privacy)

Amsterdam, North Holland, NetherlandsCompetitiveHybrid0 applicants

About this role

At Fourthline, our mission is to fight financial crime. We help protect the global financial system by verifying millions of identities for banks, neobanks, online brokers, crypto exchanges, and insurers like N26, Trade Republic, flatexDEGIRO, Nationale Nederlanden, Qonto, Shine, Solarisbank, and more.

Having started our journey in January 2018, we're incredibly proud to count around 250 employees between our Amsterdam and Barcelona offices with over 50 nationalities.

About the role

We are looking for an ambitious and enthusiastic (mid-level) Legal Counsel to join our Legal team at Fourthline’s HQ in Amsterdam!

We are a fintech company and a payment institution supervised by the Dutch Central Bank, operating in a highly regulated environment. This makes our work complex, fast-paced and impactful. In this phase of growth, the Legal function plays a central role in enabling the business to scale in a compliant and sustainable way.

This is a hands-on, business-facing role where you will play an active part in shaping how the organisation operates and scales. That means that you are able to challenge the business for those important devils that are in the details. You will work closely with the other Legal team members, with direct exposure to senior stakeholders and room to grow as the team scales.

About the team

You will join a small, highly engaged Legal team that works closely with all stakeholders across the company. We like to stay close to the business, solve real problems and build scalable solutions while enjoying the work we do together.

Responsibilities

  • As Legal Counsel, you will take ownership of a broad range of legal topics, with a strong focus on commercial contracting and privacy:
  • Draft and negotiate client and vendor contracts
  • Act as a trusted legal advisor to the Commercial team and other business functions
  • Advise on a broad range of data protection matters, including GDPR compliance
  • Maintain and further develop the company’s data protection framework and support ongoing compliance
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments and translate new legislation into clear, practical guidance for the business
  • Provide pragmatic legal guidance on day-to-day legal, regulatory and compliance matters across the organisation
  • Develop and improve legal and privacy processes, templates and tools that support scalability
  • Support the Legal team on a broad range of general legal matters as required

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in law
  • At least 4 years of experience as a lawyer in private practice and/or as an in-house lawyer, with a focus on contracting (and privacy is a plus)
  • Experience working for a (regulated) scale-up or financial institution (e.g. fintech, bank or investment firm) is a strong plus
  • Solid knowledge of EU data protection regulations or a clear willingness to deepen this expertise
  • Based in Amsterdam
  • Excellent Dutch and English skills (written and spoken)
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Pragmatic, communicative and business-minded
  • Self-starter with a hands-on mentality and willingness to take ownership
