About this role

What Cognite is: Relentless to achieve

Cognite operates at the forefront of industrial digitalization, building AI, and data solutions that solve the world’s hardest, highest-impact problems. With unmatched industrial heritage and a comprehensive suite of AI capabilities, including low-code AI agents, Cognite accelerates the digital transformation to drive operational improvements.

We thrive in challenges. We challenge assumptions. We execute with speed and ownership. If you view obstacles as signals to step forward - not backwards - you’ll feel right at home here.

Our Moonshot is bold: Unlock $100B in customer value by 2035, and redefine how global industry works. Join us in this venture where AI and data meet ingenuity, and together, we will forge the path to a smarter, more connected industrial future.

How you’ll demonstrate Ownership

Own the end-to-end mission and capacity of your team (6-10 engineers), executing on applications and services that operate at global industrial scale. Continuously refine the team's structure, tooling, and processes to optimize throughput and technical agility.

Drive operational excellence and serve as the technical authority for your domain. Ensure all engineering artifacts meet the highest internal bar for quality and maintainability, ensuring system architecture and operational decisions maximize throughput while driving cost efficiency and managing cloud expenditure.

Lead team-level architecture and strategic direction. Drive architectural trade-offs (short-term impact vs. long-term quality/debt) that directly impact the platform's scalability and reliability.

Guaranteeing predictable delivery while proactively mitigating technical risk and debt. Act as the primary point of contact for cross-functional stakeholders, using a candid, solution-oriented approach to resolve high-stakes dependencies.

Coach engineers on their development. Actively model and enforce a culture of radical candor and high-performance accountability. Dedicate time to identifying and mentoring successor talent within the team.

Ensure the team's engineering outcomes are directly traceable to customer value and company revenue drivers by owning the feedback loop from production data to product execution.

The Impact you bring to Cognite

Strategic Background: You possess experience from a high-bar engineering culture (e.g., top-tier B2B SaaS, hyper-scaler, or leading platform company) with a track record of driving change in a complex, multi-product environment.

Technical Depth: Deep expertise in building and operating fault-tolerant, low-latency, high-volume data processing systems at exabyte scale (P99 reliability). You understand the cost-to-serve implications of architectural decisions.

Architectural Versatility & Innovation: Demonstrated experience designing, launching, and managing strategic architectural pivots (e.g., shift from monolithic to composable systems). You are a builder of platforms, not just applications.

Stakeholder management: You possess excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, adept at aligning executives and external partners with organizational objectives, including interactions with senior leadership..

Required Qualifications

Engineering Leadership: 5+ years of experience specifically managing software engineering teams is required. You have a proven history of mentoring developers, overseeing technical delivery, and scaling engineering organizations through periods of growth and ambiguity.

Preferred Experience

Frontend Platform Leadership: Experience designing, launching, or managing application development frameworks, UI component libraries, or design systems.

AI/ML Integration: Practical experience integrating AI models, agents, or advanced analytics directly into platform services or user workflows (e.g., supporting context transfer or intelligent decision-making).

Strategic Ambiguity Management: You possess the executive maturity to lead teams and define direction through significant ambiguity and strategic pivots (L4/Director requirement), translating unclear objectives into concrete execution plans.

Industry Context (Optional): Prior exposure to the demands and constraints of the Industrial IoT, Oil & Gas, or Asset-Heavy industries is a plus.
