Job Description:

Lead a distributed team of Product Safety / Hazard Communication professionals to safeguard Castrol’s licence to sell by delivering extraordinary hazard communication and chemical compliance across all markets. The Authority Team Leader will own the strategy, governance, quality, continuous improvement and delivery of product safety / hazard communication documentation (Safety Data Sheets-SDSs, labels and other), classification of, regulatory notifications (incl. EU PCN/UFI), and the data/systems landscape that underpin Castrol’s product stewardship and compliance objectives.

What success looks like (indicative targets)

Right‑first‑time SDS/label input rate determined through peer reviews or internal inspections at or above internal targets.

Turnaround and cycle time for SDS updates and regulatory change implementation (e.g., GHS/CLP revisions, new hazard classes, new chemical substance classifications) within agreed service levels.

On‑time notifications or exemptions such as EU PCN/UFI submissions, Canada HMIRA filings and maintenance across impacted portfolios.

Data management and integrity targets

Fit-for-purpose product stewardship systems or solutions (e.g., Sphera Intelligent Author (preferred) and other internal systems such as product life cycle management solutions or regulatory compliance tools).

Audit/inspection readiness and satisfactory outcomes (internal, customer, authority).

Key accountabilities

Global product safety / hazard communication regulatory strategy & governance:

Set the direction for global Product Safety (HazCom) compliance: GHS, CLP (incl. recent hazard class updates), REACH, OSHA HazCom, HMIRA, ISHL, US TSCA interfaces – non-exhaustive list. Also involves translating regulatory change into company standards, work instructions and deployment plans.

Documentation & classification quality management system:

Govern the creation and upkeep of SDSs/labels and mixture classification (incl. applied tox/ecotox inputs), through embedding a robust peer review process and management of change controls. Ensure Dangerous Goods classification governance (UN Orange Book/ADR/IMDG/IATA).

Notifications & submissions (EU and Rest-of-World):

Oversee EU PCN/UFI strategy and execution as well as any other notifications or registration relating to hazard communication requirements. Define data standards and roles (duty holders, distributors) and ensure timely updates as compositions/use types change. Coordinate with other teams for authority notifications and dossiers and other related compliance activities.

Data, systems & automation:

Lead the Product Safety data model and platform roadmap (e.g., Sphera IA), prioritizing enhancements, steward UAT/regression, and driving automation. This can go beyond product safety / hazard communication systems including other regulatory compliance management tools also including collaborate with other internal systems.

Collaborator engagement & external representation:

Partner with Product Technology, Supply Chain, Legal, HSSE and other compliance teams. Represent bp in industry forums and with solution providers to influence roadmaps and share guideline.

People leadership & capability:

Build and develop a high‑performing, team with varied strengths in Mumbai; define skills pathways (authoring, classification, notifications, systems/data), mentor seniors, and recruit against globally required abilities (e.g. SDS tools, DG, REACH/CLP, global GHS, PCN).

Essential education & Experience:

Bachelor’s in Chemistry or related science degree. Advanced degree or equivalent experience preferred (toxicology/ecotox advantageous).

10+ years in Product Safety/HazCom/Product Stewardship with global remit and team leadership experience.

Proven leadership of SDS/label quality systems, classification governance, and notifications/PCN programs.

Validated ownership of authoring platforms and content (e.g., SAP EHS + 3E,

Sphera IA

(preferred), Lisam, UL WERCS), including change control/testing and vendor engagement.
